Someone needs to do research on the cycling habits and related of ex-UCSB students... i.e. do they continue cycling wherever they live, do they move to cycle-friendly places, get frustrated or worse by lack of possibilities, etc.
In conversations with ex-students, it seems that moving to a non-bike friendly city deters cycling. There's social pressure to drive a car and safety concerns. The bicycle sits in the garage.
Also, one bad experience (bike theft, accident) can prevent cycling as well.
