In Search of the SoCal Bike-Culture

Most Bike by the Sea photos are taken on photo expeditions: I sit at a spot where I may see a lot of cyclists and wait for unique shots. Last weekend I spotted so many cyclists enjoying the Fourth of July holiday.

Since some cyclists are only feet away, and to be polite, I've started asking if I can take their photo. This usually starts a short conversation where I mention Cycle Chic and Bike by the Sea. It seems that most have not heard of the Cycle Chic movement, but the reception is always good. Here are some cool cyclists I've recently met:

Tommy & Sharron

Awesome pictures! I'm always shy mentioning my blog and I've only done it a couple of times, but I'm getting more confident as time goes by.

It was hard for me at first too.

You should start a "Chicago Cycle Chic" blog! Or have a weekly post dedicated to it on Let's Go Ride a Bike. ;)

Those photos look nice! I also feel more comfortable asking people to pose for photos, rather than just snapping without their awareness. Usually, people are pretty happy and proud to pose with their bikes!

I've started to ask permission to despite my shyness. Now I just need to start posting it to my blog!

Your models look happy.

For me it all depends on the mood I'm in. I like the street shots a lot myself, but I tend to feel akward at times to make them. You getstrange looks. Some days I care, somedays I don't.

But when I see someone to cool to be true, I ride or even run after them and ask them to pose. And lik you say, usually they are proud.

I also have to make photo expeditions. I have asked a few people but those are usually people walking with or standing near their bike. I've not had anyone say no yet.

stefanv, I have run a couple times too. I don't really get many looks - I think locals imagine I'm a tourist.

Can't wait to get a camera where I can use zoom. The photos on cyclechic.be look like they are high quality photos.

That's a great idea about having a weekly installment of Chicago Cycle Chic. No one else I've seen has been doing that yet. I need to devote time to getting off my bike and capturing others going by. Lots of subjects now in the summer!

Dottie,

The City of Chicago seems like its got a lot of character and historical monuments. I would LOVE to see photos of cyclist against the landscape.

Good luck and have fun spotting!
